2010-11
Matthews appeared in 33 games as a rookie with two starts to his credit. He established career-highs with 15 points and eight rebounds against Norfolk State, his first-ever start for the Stags. He followed up with another start at Savannah State, his last start of the year. Matthews scored in 25 of his 33 appearances, including three double-figure games. In addition to Norfolk State, the forward also reached double digits at Marist (12 points) and Austin Peay (10 points). Matthews was one of the team’s top offensive rebounders with 38 of his 78 caroms coming off the offensive glass. He secured three or more offensive rebounds in eight times, and had more offensive than defensive rebounds in 11 outings. Matthews knew how to take care of the basketball in 2010-11, turning the ball over just eight times in 350 minutes. His one turnover per 43-plus minutes led the team, nearly 10 minutes better than Lyndon Jordan’s next-best margin of one turnover every 34 minutes.
Before Fairfield
Keith Matthews joined the Stags program after four successful seasons at Sebastian River High School. He graduated from Sebastian River as the winningest student-athlete in the program’s history with 86 victories, five more wins than the previous high. He was also the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,867 points, which led him to a McDonald’s All-America nomination. A four-year starter, Matthews averaged 17.7 points and seven rebounds as a junior, number which he improved with 19.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per contest as a senior. He entered his senior season ranked 20th on the Florida Hoops Top 100 players list. He earned All-Area accolades all four years, starting with an h onorable mention as a freshman and finishing up with a first-team berth as a sophomore, junior, and senior. He capped his career at Sebastian River by collecting the Scripps Treaure Coast Newspapers Boys Basketball Player of the year award. He helped Sebastian River win two consecutive district titles. Before deciding to attend Fairfield University, Matthews also considered Wintrhop and Youngstown State.
