Men's Basketball Remains Unbeaten In Italy With 10

The Fairfield University men's basketball team improved to 2-0 on its Italian tour with a101-70 over Forli. The Stags outscored their opposition by 29 in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Fairfield owned a 36-7 advantage in the final period.

"As a whole, I was happy with how the team responded to Forli's resiliency," Head Coach Sydney Johnson said after the game. "After starting out the game very well, we got away from some of our key strengths on defense and offense. During that stretch, Forli relied on their professional experience and took advantage of every breakdown that we had. Somewhere between the third and fourth quarters, we cleared our heads a bit and played harder and smarter."

Rakim Sanders proved to be the difference in this game, making 14 of 15 shots from the field en route to a 35-point effort. He just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Senior Ryan Olander also made an impact with 12 points and seven rebounds for the Stags. The team enjoyed another balanced attack with six other Stags scoring between six and nine points in the victory.

"Rakim clearly had a stand out game but the efforts of Derek (Needham), Colin (NIckerson), Ryan and even Sean in limited play showed that taking care of details could make us a much tougher team," Coach Johnson said.

The men's basketball team continues its tour of Italy by heading to Pisa for a quick tour before moving on to Treviso and Venice. Fairfield's next game is slated for August 23 against Blu Basket Treviglio.
