FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University's Scott Gussaroff no-hit Iona College for 6.2 innings and fanned 12 batters while the Stags offense was red-hot as Fairfield upended the Gaels, 11-4, in the series finale at Alumni Diamond.
Gussaroff set a career-best with 12 strikeouts on the day, going 8.1 innings and scattering four runs, one earned, on just three hits. After walking Iona's Matt Kriss with two outs in the second inning, Gussaroff mowed down the next 14 batters until issuing a one-out walk to Mike Chiaravalloti in the seventh. The no-hit bid was ended two batters later as Anthony Muccio singled through the right side, just out of the reach of a diving Fairfield defense.
Fairfield (18-23; 9-9 MAAC), meanwhile, pounded out 11 runs on 14 hits and scored in all but two innings. Five Stags had multi-hit days as well. The Stags got the scoring started in the bottom of the first as Furbeck trotted home on a single by Nathans. In the second inning, Plourde led off with a walk while Horning was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt by Wosleger moved the runners up 90 feet. Junior Larry Cornelia then executed a successful suicide squeeze allowing Plourde to score. Furbeck followed with a RBI single to push the lead to 3-0.
Fairfield broke it open in the bottom of the third inning with a five run effort. DeVito led off with a single and came around to score on a ground rule double off the bat of Plourde. After Horning singled to centerfield, Wosleger drove in Plourde to extend the lead to 5-0. With two on and two outs, Furbeck hit a three-run bomb to right field to put the Stags on top 8-0. It was the first home run of the season for Furbeck.
In the bottom of the fourth, Nathans hit his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to right field. Nathans also drove in a run in the bottom of the fifth to give Fairfield a 10-0 advantage. After Iona (17-28; 7-11 MAAC) scored in the seventh, the Stags got the run back in the eighth on a RBI triple by Wosleger.
