FAIRFIELD, Conn. – For the final time in 1,142 games, Fairfield University Baseball Head Coach John Slosar emerged from the dugout and presented the umpire with his starting line-up. The Stags did the rest, sending off their skipper in grand fashion, as Fairfield topped Saint Peter's 8-2 in the season finale at Alumni Diamond.
Slosar retires as the winningest coach in program history with 481-654-7 record and a .424 winning percentage in 27 years at the helm of the Stags. Slosar's career spans 35 years at Fairfield University, as he began as an assistant coach in 1975.
Graduate student Scott Gussaroff put an exclamation point on the end of his career as well, striking out nine batters and scattering two runs on five hits over 7.0 innings of work for the victory. Gussaroff (5-6) finished the season with a 3.72 ERA and 89 strikeouts, the second-highest single season total in program history. Gussaroff also checked into Fairfield's career top-10 list in strikeouts, finishing with 166 in 48 career appearances.
Friday's game also marked the end of the careers for the Stags five seniors – Brian Comiskey, Carmine DeVito, Chris Horning, Tucker Nathans, Justin Nusblatt.
Nathans went 2-for-5 with a run scored in his final game in a Stags uniform. Nathans, who never missed a game in 193 opportunities and made 180 consecutive starts, finished his career as the program leader in hits (263), doubles (61), and triples (10) as well as second all-time in runs scored with 141, one run shy of the program record. He also is second all-time in career RBI (155) and batting average (.352), fifth in career slugging percentage (.536), and seventh in home runs (19).
Junior Tyler Wosleger went 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored, and two driven in while sophomore Jack Giannini was 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Fairfield staked Gussaroff a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Stags sent nine batters to the plate and scored all five runs before Saint Peter's (16-34; 5-18 MAAC) recorded an out. The first run of the day came as leadoff man Ryan Furbeck scored on a wild pitch. Wosleger drove in two runs with a single while Giannini drove in two more with a single to right field. The Stags added another run in the second inning on a single by Horning.
Gussaroff retired the first nine batters of the game before giving up a leadoff hit to Mike Scicutella in the fourth inning. Scicutella came around to score on a one-out double by Russ Stupienski. Gussaroff then retired seven of the next eight batters he faced.
Fairfield scored its final two runs in the sixth inning while Saint Peter's got one of the runs back in the seventh. Comiskey pitched the final two innings of the game, scattering two hits in his final appearance as a Stag.
Horning finished the day 3-for-5 with a RBI while DeVito walked and scored a run. Nusblatt went 1-for-4 on the day.
Fairfield finishes the season with a 22-25 overall record, the most wins since the 2000 season. By sweeping Saint Peter's, the Stags finished with a 13-11 MAAC record for their first winning league mark since the 2001 campaign and just missed a berth in the conference tournament.
