FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Senior Chris Horning powered the Fairfield University offense with four RBI in the opener while junior Brett Shulick tossed a two-hit complete game shutout in the night cap as the Stags swept a doubleheader from Saint Peter's this afternoon at Alumni Diamond. Fairfield took game one by a margin of 12-9 before blanking the Peacocks, 1-0, in the second team of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) twin bill.
Horning went a combined 3-for-6 on the day with a double, a home run, four RBI, and a run scored. Senior Tucker Nathans went 3-for-7 with two doubles, three runs scored, and three driven in while junior Tyler Wosleger went 3-for-7 with two runs scored and two RBI on the day.
Shulick (4-3) had an impressive outing in the second game, striking out six batters over 7.0 innings for his first complete game shutout of the season. Shulick, who walked just one batter, no-hit the Peacocks through the first four innings before Chris Grimes led off the fifth with a single. Shulick retired the next seven batters he faced before Russ Stupienski singled with one out in the seventh inning. Stupienski moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, but Shulick induced two infield pop-ups to end the game.
The second game's only run came with one out in the second inning. After Wosleger reached on an error, Horning followed with a single while Jack Giannini walked to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Wosleger to score easily from third to give the Stags the lead. Mark Skrapits then drew a walk, but starter Dom Macaluso and Saint Peter's got the Stags to ground into an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam.
Macaluso (4-9) took the loss for the Peacocks after scattering one run on four hits and three walks over 6.0 innings.
In the opener, Fairfield took an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After Nathans scored on a single by Wosleger, Horning hit his first homer of the season, a three-run shot over the left field fence. Saint Peter's tied the game with a four-run second inning. The Stags responded with two runs in the bottom of the second on a RBI double by Nathans and an RBI single by Wosleger to give the Stags the 6-4 lead.
Saint Peter's moved out to a 7-6 advantage in the fifth inning after Preston Aldridge knocked in two runs. The Stags tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Larry Cornelia. Horning put the Stags on top, 8-7, in the sixth inning with a two-out double. Fairfield added three more runs in the seventh and another in the eighth inning.
Junior Gavin McCullough picked up the win for the Stags after throwing 5.0 innings of relief as he improved to 1-3 this season. Brian Schroeder (1-1) took the loss after surrendering three runs on three hits and a walk in an inning of work.
With the win, Fairfield improves to 21-25 overall and 12-11 in the MAAC. The 21 victories are the most since the 2000 campaign for the Stags, Fairfield, which just missed the cut for the MAAC Tournament, will finish with a .500 or better MAAC record since 2001.
Fairfield and Saint Peter's will close out the 2011 campaign tomorrow, May 20, with a single game with first pitch slated for 12:15pm. The Stags will honor its senior class prior to the start of the game in a ceremony beginning at 11:55am.
