Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Fairfield University baseball team was edged 1-0 at Canisius College this afternoon in a pitcher's duel at Demske Sports Complex.

Fairfield right hander Scott Gussaroff scattered five hits over eight innings of work while striking out six batters. Canisius' Alex Tufts (4-2) allowed just three hits in 5.1 innings for the victory while Jordan Cave notched the save, tossing two hitless and scoreless innings of relief.

Canisius scored the game's only run in the bottom of the second inning. Brian Burton led the stanza off with a walk and later came around to score on a one-out single by Chris Gruarin.

Fairfield threatened in the sixth inning loading the bases with one out but Canisius reliever Nathan Linseman was able to get a groundball for the inning-ending double play. The Stags put two runners on with one out in the top of the seventh, but could not capitalize.

Senior Tucker Nathans led off the eighth with a single and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by rookie Ryan Plourde. Canisius was able to hold off the Stags once again as Cave struck out the final two batters of the inning to preserve the 1-0 lead. Cave then retired the Stags in order in the top of the ninth for his second save of the year.

With the loss, Fairfield falls to 10-11 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and 19-25 overall while Canisius improves to 10-9 in the league and 22-28 overall.

Fairfield, still alive in the hunt for a MAAC Tournament berth, closes out the regular season, May 19-20, as Saint Peter's visits Alumni Diamond. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 12pm followed by a single game on Friday at 12pm. Prior to first pitch on Friday, the Stags will honor its senior class.
