Baseball Nipped By Siena 2-1

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Siena College used a ninth inning rally to overtake the Fairfield University baseball team, 2-1, this afternoon in the series finale at Alumni Diamond. With the loss, the Stags fall to 7-8 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) while the Saints improve to 8-7.

Fairfield (15-22) threatened in the first inning as senior Tucker Nathans tripled to right field with two outs but the Stags could not bring him in. Nathans once again made his mark in the Fairfield record books as his triple was the tenth of his career, tying him with Bob Ciccone and Bill Wilson for the Stags career record.

Rookie Ryan Plourde put Fairfield on the board in the fourth inning with a solo home run, the second of his career, deep over the left field fence. Stags starter Scott Gussaroff, meanwhile, shut down Siena (19-25) for seven innings, scattering three hits while striking out five.

With one out in the top of the ninth, a Fairfield error would lead to a pair of Siena runs allowing the Saints to pull ahead 2-1. In the bottom half of the inning, the Stags mounted a comeback. Sophomore Anthony Hajjar singled up the middle with one out while Plourde later drew a two-out walk. Junior Nick Piccirillo then singled to right field but a strong throw to the plate on the play and a quick throw to third base by Siena catcher Larry Balkwill cut down the Stags lead runner and ended the game.

Siena's Zach Hartman (5-4) got the win with a complete game effort, allowing just one run on eight hits with six strikeouts. Gussaroff received the no-decision in his seven scoreless inning outing. Sophomore Mark Bordonaro took the loss, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits in 2.0 innings.

Nathans, Hajjar, and Piccirillo each went 2-for-4 on the day. Plourde finished the day 1-for-3 with a walk. Junior Ryan Furbeck extended his on-base streak to 22 games with a leadoff single in the eighth inning.

Fairfield returns to action on May 5 at Quinnipiac in the Stags final non-league game of the season.
