Softball Sweeps Siena In MAAC Road Doubleheader

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- Kristina Lingo collected five hits while Sarah Minice collected both wins in the pitching circle as the Fairfield University softball team posted a 5-3 win and a 4-3 12-inning victory against Siena College in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. The Stags improved to 16-13 overall and 3-1 in conference games.

The Stags received a lot of offense from Tiffany Lawson in the opener as the sophomore registered four hits with two RBI. She started the Stags off with a first inning RBI triple and scored the team's second run to spot Minice a 2-0 lead before she stood on the pitching rubber.

Fairfield doubled up that lead with two more runs in the third inning, courtesy of a two-run single from Rae Ball. Her base hit chased home Alli Wigand and Lingo, who reached base with a walk and a fielder's choice, respectively. Siena picked up one run in the bottom of the third when the team pieced together a pair of hits to make the score 4-1.

Kimi Kurata and Lawson combined for a pair of doubles to plate the Stags final run in the sixth inning, expanding the lead to 5-1. The Saints made things more interesting with a pair of runs in the seventh, but Minice eventually shut the door on the rally. Minice scattered eight hits and fanned seven innings to earn her seventh win of the season.

Fairfield needed 12 innings to win the nightcap, as Lingo recorded four hits in the game. The senior's last hit proved to be the difference in the game as she sliced a single to start the inning. Wigand sent her to second with a bunt. Lingo secured third base with a passed ball, and came home when Ball drove a base hit to left field.

The Stags took a 1-0 lead in the game when Kristen Filicia was hit by a pitch and followed up by stealing both second and third bases. She came home when Lingo placed a single for a 1-0 lead. Fairfield tallied two more runs in the third inning with Filicia being in the middle of the rally. She walked and stole second to reach scoring position. She went to third on a fielder's choice and came home on a wild pitch. Fairfield added a run in the inning off a RBI single from Alli Wigand which sent home Lauren Liseth.

Siena tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth as a pair of doubles were instrumental in the rally. Minice entered the game in the sixth inning in relief of starter Rebecca Trott. She went the final six-plus innings without allowing a run and striking out eight hitters to secure the win.

Fairfield returns to the diamond on April 10 when it hosts the University of Hartford for a doubleheader. The first pitch is at 1 pm.
