Men's Tennis Tops Niagara, 6-1

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's tennis team defeated Niagara in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match-up this afternoon on the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts. The Stags improve to 9-8 overall, and 3-1 in the MAAC while the Purple Eagles fall to 2-12 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

In doubles play, Joe Michalisin and Erik Kremheller won their sixth consecutive doubles match as they blanked Niagara's Matt Kane and Mathieu Lacasse 8-0. The No. 1 spot duo is now an impressive 20-5 overall. At second doubles, Rob Ferrante and Dennis Zlobinsky were up 5-4 over David Lemieux-Sarrasin, before they had to retire due to injury. Dan Sauter and Bjorn Merinder topped Matt Bojanowski and Brandon Gallegos 8-4 in the third position.

At first singles, Michalisin was up 6-3, 3-2, over Matt Kane before Kane retired. Sauter was victorious over Gallegos, 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot, while Zlobinsky handled Joe Zelic 6-0, 6-1 at third singles. At No. 4 singles, Kremheller blanked Jordan Tedesco-Blair, 6-0, 6-0, and Reece Breault was unable to hold off Mathieu Lacasse in a three-set match, 4-6, 7-6, 10-6  in the fifth position. Merinder rounded out the scoring for the Stags in the sixth position prevailing in a close 3-6, 6-1, 10-3  match to David Lemieux-Sarrasin.

The Stags take on non-conference Providence College in their fourth match of the week, tomorrow April 10. The match time is set for 3pm.
