TheFairfield University baseball team was edged 3-1 by Manhattan College this afternoon as the two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foes wrapped up the season series at Van Cortlandt Park.
 
Juniors Larry Cornelia and Nick Piccirillo had multi-hit days for the Stags as Cornelia went 2-for-3 while Piccirillo went 2-for-4 with a triple.
 
Fairfield (7-15; 1-5 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Junior Mark Skrapits led off with a single and advanced to second on a single by Cornelia. With two outs, sophomore Anthony Hajjar was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Skrapits then scored on a wild pitch. The Jaspers' Mike Giordano was able to pitch out of the jam, leaving Stags at second and third.
 
Manhattan (12-11; 6-0) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Austin Sheffield. The Jaspers took the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a RBI single by Sheffield. Chad Salem, who went 3-for-4 on the day, made it a 3-1 game in the bottom of the eighth with a RBI single to center.
 
Giordano moved to the 3-1 on the season for the Jaspers, scattering one run on five hits while striking out nine batters. Jacob Marchus picked up the save after tossing a scoreless ninth. Junior Scott Warwick went 7.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out five batters in the loss. Junior Gavin McCullough pitched the final two-thirds of an inning for the Stags.
 
Fairfield returns to action on April 5 with a 3:30pm contest at Army. The Stags resume MAAC play and action at Alumni Diamond, April 9-10, with a three-game series against Niagara University.
