Softball Picks Up Split With Central Connecticut

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Kristen Filicia and Mikayla Shumate each stroked four hits in a doubleheader against Central Connecticut as the Stags split the twinbill. Fairfield won the opener by a 7-1 score, but dropped the nightcap by a 4-3 count.

In the opener, the Blue Devils scored first with a single run in the top of the first inning. Arielle Bruno led off the inning with a walk, went to second on a sacrifice and scored after Kelsey Barlow singled up the middle. Fairfield took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning courtesy of a two-run double by Lauren Liseth and an RBI double by Kristina Lingo.

Fairfield added a single run in the fourth and fifth innings with Alli Wigand stealing home on the front end of a double steal. The next inning, Filicia led off with a single and eventually came home on a passed ball. The Stags closed the scoring with two runs in the sixth inning with the key hit coming off the bat of Filicia. Her single drove home Rachel Beaudoin and Rae Ball to make the score 7-1.

Ball went the distance to earn her fifth win of the season, striking out two batters and scattering eight hits.

In the second game, Central Connecticut sent home a pair of runs in the top of the first inning with Macy Stefanski driving home the first run on a single. Stefanski got caught in a run down while trying to steal second which allowed Becca Mussatti to score from third base. The Blue Devils padded their lead with a run in the second inning to move the score to 3-0.

Fairfield tied the game in the bottom of the third inning with three runs. Liseth's grounder sent home the first run, followed by an RBI single by Lingo. The tying run came home following Wigand's sacrifice fly to to left field. The Blue Devils scored the winning run in the fifth inning when Amanda Dilworth bunted on a squeeze play to score Bruno.

Rebecca Trott pitched a complete game for the Stags, but fell to 2-4 despite fanning five hitters. Elizabeth Montemurro earned her eighth win by pitching the first four innings, before Jordan Tingley hurled the final three innings to earn the save.

Fairfield returns to conference play this weekend when it hosts Saint Peter's for two games on Saturday and Manhattan on Sunday. Both doubleheaders start at 1 pm.
