LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Fairfield University baseball team was edged 6-3 at Rider University this afternoon in the series finale at Sonny Pittaro Field.
Rider took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single by A.J. Albee. Fairfield tied it up in the top of the third inning as
Ryan Furbeck led off with a single, stole second, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by DeVito.
The Broncs regained the lead, 2-1, in the bottom half of the inning as Brandon Cotten scored on a groundball after leading off with a single. Rider broke it open with two outs in the fifth inning, tallying four runs to extend its lead to 6-1.
Fairfield responded in the top of the sixth as DeVito led off the inning with a homer. The Stags pulled within 6-3 in the top of the seventh on a RBI double by
Mark Skrapits. Rider was able to hold off the Stags for the win.
Joe Calogero picked up the win for the Broncs, going 6.2 and allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits. Right hander
Scott Gussaroff took the loss in a six-inning effort in which he allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out seven. Senior
Brian Comiskey tossed two scoreless innings of relief.
Fairfield is back in action tomorrow, April 27, when the Stags host Stony Brook at 3:30pm on Alumni Diamond.
