FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Fairfield University men's tennis team advances to the MAAC Championships Final after defeating third-seeded Niagara University, 6-1 this afternoon. The Stags will go head-to-head with Marist College in the championship match for the fourth consecutive season. Match time is set for 12:00pm at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
The Stags went undefeated in doubles play to secure the doubles point.
Joe Michalisin and
Erik Kremheller won their eighth straight doubles match with their victory over Niagara's Matt Kane and Mathieu Lacasse, 8-6 in the top spot. At No 2 doubles,
Rob Ferrante paired with
Dennis Zlobinsky to defeat David Lemieux-Sarrasin and Joseph Zelic, 8-3, while
Dan Sauter and
Bjorn Merinder handled Brandon Gallegos and Jordan Tedesco-Blair, 8-6 in the third position.
In singles action, Michalisin topped Kane, 7-5, 6-4, at first singles, and Sauter took care of Gallegos, 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 2 spot. At third singles, Kremheller won his 20
th singles match with a decisive 6-0, 6-1 victory over Zelic. At fourth singles, Zlobinsky defeated Tedesco-Blair, 6-4, 6-2, and Ferrante topped Lacasse, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Rounding out the scoring for the Stags was freshman
Reece Breault at sixth singles. Breault split the first two sets, but was unable to hold of Lemieux-Sarrasin and fell in a hard fought 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 match.
