STORRS, Conn. – The Fairfield University baseball team fell to Big East foe University of Connecticut, 13-2, this afternoon at J.O. Christian Field.
Junior Ryan Furbeck had a pair of hits on the day for the Stags while senior Carmine DeVito went 1-for-2 with a two walks and two RBI.
Furbeck singled to lead off the game and extended his hitting streak to 10 games in the process. The centerfielder has reached base safely in 16 consecutive games.
UConn (23-12-1) scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning. With two on and one out, Nick Ahmed doubled to drive in the Huskies' first run of the day. UConn had loaded the bases with two outs when Ryan Fuller cleared them with a double to deep left center.
Fairfield (12-18) got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Tucker Nathans led off with a single, advanced to second on an error, and scored on a single by DeVito. UConn countered in the bottom half of the frame with three runs to extend its lead to 7-1. They added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 11-1 advantage.
The Stags scored again in the top of the eighth inning as DeVito drew a bases loaded walk with two outs to force home Furbeck. In the bottom half of the inning, the Huskies posted two additional runs on a home run by George Springer.
UConn's Pat Butler notched the win, holding the Stags to an unearned run and four hits in 6.0 innings. Junior Gavin McCullough took the loss after he was charged with seven runs in 3.1 innings.
Fairfield resumes Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action this weekend at Rider. The series begins with a doubleheader on April 23 and finishes up with a single game on April 25.
