Scott Gussaroff threw eight shutout innings, striking out six and scattering six hits for his third victory of the year. Sophomore
Mark Bordonaro combined for the shutout, tossing a scoreless ninth. Fairfield did not allow a Central Connecticut (17-13-1) base runner to advance beyond second base the entire day.
Fairfield (12-17) staked Gussaroff a four-run lead before he even threw pitch, as the Stags sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs on five hits in the top of the first inning. Junior
Ryan Furbeck led off with a double to right center and
Nick Piccirillo followed with a double down to the leftfield line to make the score 1-0. Piccirillo then scored on a double to right by
Tucker Nathans With one out,
Carmine DeVito doubled down the leftfield line to plate Nathans. Rookie
Ryan Plourde followed with an RBI double of his own to give the Stags a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the eighth, DeVito tripled with one out and scored on a two-out single by senior
Chris Horning to push the Stags' lead to 5-0.
DeVito was a homerun short of the cycle, finishing the day 3-for-4 with two runs scored, one batted in, and a stolen base. Furbeck finished the day 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Furbeck extended his hitting streak to nine games and has reached base in 15-straight games.
CCSU starter Tom Coughlin took the loss, last just two-thirds of an inning.
Fairfield continues non-league play on Tuesday, April 19 at UConn.
