FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University baseball team fell to Central Connecticut State University, 3-0, on a chilly and windy afternoon at Alumni Diamond. Junior Nick Piccirillo went 3-for-5 on the day for the Stags.
Central Connecticut (17-12-1), winners of seven straight, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a solo homerun by Anthony Turgeon. The Blue Devils added two more runs in the top of the fourth on a double by Mitch Wells and a single by Sean Miller-Jones.
Fairfield had their chances throughout the day, but stranded 13 base runners in all. In the first two innings, the Stags loaded the bases twice with one out but could not capitalize.
Blue Devils starter Nick Neumann (3-1) picked up the win after striking out seven batters and scattering five hits in 5.0 innings of work. Harry Glynne notched his first save of the season after striking out five batters and giving up just four hits in 4.0 innings.
Junior Brett Shulick (2-2) had a solid outing, fanning seven batters in 7.0 innings, but took the loss after scattering three runs, two earned, on four hits. Senior Brian Comiskey threw two scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out three batters.
Junior Ryan Furbeck went 2-for-4 on the day to extend his hitting streak to eight games and his on-base streak to 14 contests. Junior Tyler Wosleger also had a multi-hit day going 2-for-4 with a stolen base.
Fairfield and Central Connecticut State will finish out the three-game series at 1pm on Sunday, April 17.
