FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University baseball team had their four-game winning streak snapped as the Stags were edged by Central Connecticut State University, 4-2, this afternoon at Alumni Diamond. The Blue Devils (16-12-1) scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to overtake Fairfield.
The Stags (11-16) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by centerfielder Ryan Furbeck. Second baseman Tucker Nathans made it a 2-0 game with an RBI single that plated Furbeck in the bottom of the sixth.
Fairfield starter Scott Warwick, meanwhile,took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and a shutout into the seventh before CCSU scored on a sacrifice fly by AJ Lowers. Warwick allowed just one run on two hits with six strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work in the no-decision.
CCSU mounted a comeback in the top of the ninth inning. Sean Miller-Jones led off with a solo homerun to left field to tie the game 2-2. Reliever Kyle Capaldo fanned the next two batters but the Blue Devils were able to draw back-to-back walks. Both those runners would come around to score on a bloop single by Jake Matuszak which made the score 4-2.
In the bottom of the ninth, Mark Skrapits led off with a single for the Stags and advanced to second on a two-out single by Chris Horning. Fairfield's rally would fall short as the runners left on base in the ninth were just two of the 14 runners the Stags stranded on the day.
Donny Crook (1-0) notched with win for CCSU, tossing two scoreless and hitless innings of relief while Josh Ingham picked up his fourth save of the season, throwing a scoreless ninth. Capaldo (3-3) took the loss for the Stags, allowing two runs, one earned, on a hit while striking out two batters.
Furbeck went 2-for-3 with a double to extend his on-base streak to 13 games and his hitting streak to seven games. Nathans finished the day 2-for-5 while Horning was 1-for-3 with three walks, a run scored, and a RBI. Junior Nick Piccirillo also had a multi-hit game going 2-for-4.
Fairfield and CCSU play the second game of a three-game series tomorrow, April 16, at 12pm on Alumni Diamond.
