MANASQUAN, N.J. - The Fairfield University men's tennis improved to 11-8 overall, and 4-1 in the MAAC with their victory at Rider University this afternoon. The Stags blanked the Broncs, 7-0 in their second-to-last match of the 2011 regular season.
In doubles play, Joe Michalisin paired with Dennis Zlobinsky to defeat Rider's Rollie Malfitano and Matt DiMartino, 8-1 in the No. 1 doubles spot. At second doubles, senior duo of Rob Ferrante and Mark Kremheller handled Drew Laverty and Chris Esposito in a decisive 8-2 match, while Dan Sauter and Bjorn Merinder improved to 11-6 overall in doubles play with their 8-1 victory over Rob Olsen and Milo Milosovici in the No. 3 position.
At first singles, Michalisin defeated Rollie Malfitano, 6-1, 6-0, and Sauter topped Milo Milosovici, 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot. Erik Kremheller won his sixth match in a row at fourth singles as he took care of Drew Laverty 6-0, 6-1. The sophomore is now an impressive 11-1 at No. 4 singles. At fifth singles, Zlobinsky was victorious over John Spellman 6-1, 6-0. Rounding out the scoring for the Stags were freshmen Reece Breault and R.J. Mirabile who earned victories in the fifth and sixth singles spot. Breault defeated Rob Olsen 7-5, 6-2, while Mirabile topped Ryan Carpenter 6-1, 6-0.
The men's tennis team returns to play taking on conference foe Siena on April 17 on the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts. The MAAC match-up marks the final competition of the Stags' 2011 regular season. Match time is set for 11am.
