Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Junior Emily Orr tossed a five-inning no-hitter as the Stags softball team completed a sweep of the University of Hartford with an 8-0 win. Fairfield won the opening game by a 7-2 count behind the efforts of pitcher Rae Ball.

Orr just missed out on a perfect game as the Hawks managed only a second inning walk by Melani Maxwell. The left-handed pitcher retired three straight in four of her five innings in the pitching circle, and fanned one batter.

The Stags offense provided all the run support Orr would need on the day when Kristen Filicia manufactured a run with her speed. After placing a base hit up the middle, Filicia stole second base and took third following a passed ball. She came home when Mikayla Shumate's hit a line drive to right field which was caught but was deep enough for Filicia to score the run.

The score moved to 2-0 in the third inning courtesy of Filicia's base running ability. The freshman walked to lead off the inning and took second base with another stolen base. She was sacrificed to third off a bunt from Shumate. She came home when Lauren Liseth executed a safety squeeze bunt that Filicia would have beat even if the throw was on target.

Ball pushed the lead to three runs with a solo home run in the fourth inning, a ball which easily cleared the center field fence. Fairfield broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring five times to take the lead 8-0. Kristina Lingo stroked a two-run double early in the inning, while Laura Carta came up as a pinch hitter and placed a two-run single for the final two runs.

In the opener, the Stags never trailed as they staked Ball to a 2-0 lead with a pair of first-inning runs. Filicia and Shumate started the inning with a single to pu runners on first and second. With two outs, Allie Wigand drove a run-scoring single which sent home Filicia with the game's first run. Ball followed with a single through the left side for a 2-0 advantage.

In the next inning, Fairfield increased its lead with a run as Nikki Osofsky hit a lead-off double, took third on Kimi Kurata's single and came home on the tail end of a double steal. Hartford cut the lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning after Kate Wacyk hit a lead off triple and came home on Nicole Springer's sacrifice fly. The Stags picked that run back up when Liseth tripled down the right field line and came home on a throwing error by the right fielder.

The Hawks added another run in the sixth, courtesy of back-to-back doubles by Wacyk and Springer. Fairfield put the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, as Filicia, Liseth, and Shumate each had an RBI hit in the rally.

Ball went the distance, allowing seven hits and strking out one batter in seven innings of work. She improved to 4-2 wiht the victory.

The Stags are in action once again when they head to Quinnipiac University on April 13 and to Sacred Heart University on April 14. Fairfield's next home game is scheduled for April 16 against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Canisius College at 1 pm.
