STAMFORD, Conn. – The Fairfield men's tennis team fell to non-conference foe St. John's Friday night at Stamford Indoor. The loss brings the Stags to 4-2 overall.
The match was highlighted by the doubles play of Dan Sauter and Bjorn Merinder who topped Red Storm duo of Mischa Koran and Dustin Goldenberg 8-5 at third doubles.
At No. 1 doubles, Joe Michalisin and Erik Kremheller battled it out in a hard fought match against Asaf Honig and Matty Nojfeld but were unable to hold them off and fell 9-8(10). Freshmen pair of Dennis Zlobinsky and Reece Breault were blanked by Pavel Cerny and Mike Lampa, 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.
The Stags were unable to win a singles match against the Red Storm. After going 7-5, 3-2, Sauter retired against Stefan Bojic at first singles. At No. 2 singles, Michalisin fell Milo Hauk 6-3, 6-4 while Gustav Kallen topped Zlobinsky 6-4, 6-1 at third singles. Kremheller was topped by Mike Lampa 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot. St. John's Matty Najfeld defeated Rob Ferrante 6-1, 6-0 at fifth singles, and Breault fell to Mischa Koran 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot.
The Fairfield men's tennis team returns to action Sunday when they begin conference play by traveling to Jersey City to take on the Saint Peter's Peacocks. The match time is set for 1pm.
