NORFOLK, Va. – The Fairfield University baseball team took the first game of a doubleheader from Old Dominion but fell in the second this afternoon. The Stags (3-4) won the first game by a margin of 4-3 while the Monarchs (7-5) took game two by a score of 9-1.
In the opening game, the Stags got on the board in the top of the second inning on a RBI single by
Carmine DeVito to center gave Fairfield the 1-0 advantage. The Monarchs tied the game in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI double by Nathan Hartman. Fairfield took a 2-1 lead in the fourth as
Mark Skrapits scored on an error but ODU answered in the bottom half of the inning on a solo shot by Chris Baker.
Junior
Ryan Furbeck led off the fifth with a single and came around to score on
Tucker Nathans double to give Fairfield the 3-2 lead. Senior
Chris Horning drove what would prove to be the game winning run in the top of the sixth for the Stags. With two outs, Horning hit the ball to left scoring DeVito from second base to give the Stags a 4-2 advantage. The Monarchs cut the gap to 4-3, but the Stags held on for the win.
Graduate student
Scott Gussaroff recorded the win for the Stags, while
Mark Bordonaro picked up the save. Gussaroff struck out six Monarchs in 5.2 innings of work allowing seven hits and three runs. Bordonaro allowed two hits and struck out four in his first save of the season. Ben Tomchick took the loss for the Monarchs despite allowing one earned run on eight hits in six innings with four strikeouts.
Old Dominion began the scoring in game two, taking 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Baker. Fairfield tied it up in the top of the second as
Anthony Hajjar drove in
Tyler Wosleger, who bunted for a base hit and stole second earlier in the inning. That would be all the scoring for the Stags as Old Dominion added two runs in the bottom of the second, three more runs in the third inning, and added another pair to close out the fourth.
Phil McCarthy recorded the win for the Monarchs pitching all seven innings, allowing one earned run on six hits and striking out six.
Scott Warwick picked up the loss for Fairfield. He gave up five hits, six runs, and struck out three in the loss.
Wosleger and DeVito each finished the day a combined 3-for-7 at the plate.
The two teams finish the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
