NORFOLK, Va. – The Fairfield University baseball team opened a four-game series at Old Dominion University with a tough 4-1 loss this afternoon.
The Monarchs (6-4) received a stellar pitching performance by southpaw Kyle Hald who struck out 11 batters and held the Stags to two singles over seven innings of work. Hald dropped his season ERA to 0.41.
Old Dominion took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a solo homer by Nate Hartman. The Monarchs increased their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third on a three-run homer by Chris Baker.
Fairfield (2-3) got on the board in the eighth when
Ryan Plourde scored on a sacrifice fly by
Larry Cornelia.
Brett Shulick went seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Senior
Brian Comiskey tossed a perfect eighth inning in relief.
The two teams play a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
