Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. –
The Fairfield University baseball team opened play at Alumni Diamond with a tough 3-0 loss to non-league foe Fordham University this afternoon.

The Rams (15-9) pitching staff combined for a five-hit shutout of the Stags. Rich Anastasi improved to 4-0 this season for Fordham while junior Gavin McCullough was charged with his first loss of the year. McCullough scattered two unearned runs on four hits with four strikeouts over six innings for the Stags (7-12).

Fordham scored two unearned runs in the top of the second inning. Chris Walker reached on an error to start the frame and later scored from third base on a wild pitch. Fairfield threatened in the bottom half of the inning, but stranded runners at second and third.

Both teams went scoreless until the ninth inning when Fordham's Brian Kownacki delivered an RBI single, the game's first, to plate Matt DeSilva. The Rams' Tim Swatek was able to retire the Fairfield side in the bottom of the ninth for his third save of the season.

Freshman Ryan Plourde went 1-for-2 with a double while junior Tyler Wosleger had a single and stole a base as a pinch hitter. Anthony Hajjar, Nick Piccirillo and Ryan Furbeck had the other Fairfield hits on the day.

Fairfield, which played its first 18 games on the road, resumes Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play this weekend when the Stags travel to Manhattan College.
