POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. –
The Fairfield University baseball team opened Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play with a doubleheader split at Marist College, snapping the Red Foxes' 12-game winning streak. Fairfield lost the first game, 7-2, but responded with a 3-2 win in 11 innings.

It took four extra frames, but the Stags (7-10; 1-1 MAAC) were able to knock off the Red Foxes, 3-2, in the 11th inning of the second game. Fairfield loaded the bases with one out in the 11th and senior Tucker Nathans delivered a sacrifice fly to score Ryan Furbeck to give Fairfield the 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the inning, sophomore Kyle Capaldo was able to hold off the Red Foxes (15-4; 1-1 MAAC) for his second win of the season.

Marist had opened the second game by taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Fairfield overtook the Red Foxes in the fourth inning with a two-run effort. The Stags put runners on second and third after a double steal and Carmine DeVito drove them both in with a single down the right field line. Fairfield then loaded the bases but was unable to score. The Red Foxes tied it up in the bottom of the fifth.

Capaldo went 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out three batters. Sophomore Mark Bordonaro started the game, but received the no-decision after going 7.0 innings and holding Marist to two runs on one hit with three strikeouts. Marist's Eric Alessio (0-1) got the loss while Chad Gallagher received the no decision after 8.0 innings of work in which he allowed two runs on eight hits.

In the first game, Fairfield got on the board in the top of the first as Nathans scored on a Marist error. The Red Foxes responded with four runs in the bottom of the second and later added two runs in the fifth for the 6-1 lead. The Stags posted a run in the top of the sixth to make the score 6-2, but Marist got the run back one inning later.

Graduate student Scott Gussaroff struck out eight batters over seven innings in the loss while senior Brian Comiskey tossed a scoreless inning of relief. Marist's Dan Zlotnick (5-0) picked up the win after allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts in five innings.

Fairfield and Marist will wrap up the series on Sunday, March 27 at 2pm.
