SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The Fairfield University softball team finally was able to get on the diamond after a washout for the first part of its California swing. The Stags opened the Mustang Classic, hosted by Cal Poly, with a 6-2 loss to UNLV but rebounded with a 3-1 win over the host school

The Stags started the day with a quick run in the bottom of the first inning without registering a base hit. Fairfield's Kristen Filicia led off with a walk and moved up two bases following a wild pitch and passed ball, respectively. She scored when Lauren Liseth's grounder was mishandled, allowing Filicia to run home for a 1-0 lead.

The Runnin' Rebels would score the next six runs to take command in the game, beginning with a pair of runs in the third inning. The first run came home following a Fairfield error and the go-ahead run came home off an infield hit. The Rebels scored quickly in the fourth inning with a single, triple, and a sacrifice fly  in succession. UNLV used almost the same scenario with its final two runs, plating the third run after a passed ball and the fourth run with another infield hit.

Fairfield closed the scoring with a run in the seventh inning, courtesy of a single down the line by Liseth. The base hit chased home Emily Orr, who pinch ran in the inning.

The Stags fared better in the second game, getting off to a two-run lead in their first at-bat against Cal Poly. Liseth drove home the first run with a single that enabled Mikayla Shumate to bring the first run across home plate. Kristina Lingo followed Liseth with a double down the line for a 2-0 Fairfield advantage.

The two runs would be all that starting pitcher Sarah Mince would need in the game as she would scatter four hits and strike out three hitters in her complete game performance. In fact, Minice allowed one earned run in the game which came in the sixth inning.

Before that run, Fairfield would improve its lead with a single run in the fifth as Filicia walked and went to second following Shumate's sacrifice fly. She would scamper home with the team's third run when Liseth stroked a base hit which made the score 3-0. Cal Poly broke up the shutout when it put together two of its four hits in the sixth inning.

The Stags will continue play in the Mustang Classic on Saturday, taking on nationally-ranked Oregon at 1 pm (EST) and Cal Poly at 6 pm (EST).
