STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- A late game-rally and a first-inning rally proved to the be difference in a pair of losses for the Fairfield University softball team as the Stags dropped a 5-4 decision against Stony Brook and a 2-1 decision to Holy Cross at the Stony Brook Invitational.

In the first game, the Stags (7-8 overall) built a comfortable 4-0 lead through four innings. Fairfield scored a run in its first at-bat when Kristina Lingo's RBI single sent home Kristen Filicia for a 1-0 edge. The lead reached 3-0 after Rae Ball launched a two-run homer in the top of the third inning, also scoring Alli Wigand who secured first base after being hit by a pitch with two outs. The team tacked on a run in the fourth inning with Kimi Kurata running home after a passed ball.

Pitcher Rebecca Trott experienced her first trouble of the game in the fourth inning as Stony Brook broke through with a lead-off home run by Bernadette Tenuto. Samantha Rossi chased home the second with a single to center field that cut the lead in half at 4-2.

The Seawolves used the long ball to tie the game with one out in the seventh inning. as Alyssa Hawley doubled with one out and Elise Fortier ripped a two-run homer to make the score 4-4. One out later, Jessica Maloney started the winning rally with a dobule to right-center field, while Lauren Maloney singled up the middle to send her home with the game-winning run.

In the nightcap, Holy Cross scored both of its runs in the first inning, courtesy of an RBI single by Sam Fregenti and an RBI ground-out by Tiffany Medwid. The Stags scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tiffany Lawson started the rally with a single up the middle. She took second with a stolen base, and promptly came home following Laura Carta's double.
