CAMDEN, N.J. – The Fairfield University baseball team snapped a three-game skid with a 7-2 victory over Saint Joseph's University this afternoon at Campbell's Field.
Junior Scott Warwick notched his second victory of the season with his second impressive outing of the week. Warwick fanned a career-high 10 batters and scattered two runs on three hits in six innings of work. The right hander did not allow a Hawks hit until the bottom of the fourth inning when Greg Kumpel led off with a single. On March 15, Warwick no-hit Preseason Top-25 St. John's University through five innings but received a no-decision on the Stags' 2-1 extra inning loss.
Offensively, Stags sophomore Anthony Hajjar went 2-for-3 on the day with two runs scored and an RBI while senior Carmine DeVito and junior Tyler Wosleger drove in two runs apiece. Senior Tucker Nathans went 2-for-5 on the day with a run scored.
Fairfield (6-8) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as DeVito trotted home from third on a groundball off the bat of Wosleger. In the fourth inning, Nathans led off with a single, stole second base, and then scored on a single by Hajjar. Freshman Ryan Plourde made it a 3-0 game in the fifth inning with his first collegiate homerun.
The Stags added another run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Wosleger. Saint Joseph's (7-13) got on the board in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homer by Kevin Taylor. Fairfield countered with three runs in the top of the seventh, including a two-RBI double by DeVito.
Junior Gavin McCullough came on in relief of Warwick in the seventh inning and pitched two scoreless innings. Sophomore Kyle Capaldo closed things out in the ninth, retiring the side. Chad Simendiner (0-2) took the loss for the Hawks, allowing five runs, three earned, on eight hits with six strikeouts in six innings.
With his two hits on the day, Nathans brought his career total to 223 and moved closer to Fairfield's career record of 228 set by Ryan Bittner in 2002.
Fairfield returns to action on March 23 when it travels to Bryant University. The Stags open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play March 25-26 at Marist College.
