Men's Tennis Opens Play At Quinnipiac Invitational

Men's Tennis Edged By St. Joe's, 4-3

 PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Fairfield University men's tennis team was edged by St. Joe's 4-3 on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Stags won the doubles point beginning with Fairfield duo of Joe Michalisin and Erik Kremheller. The pair topped Jeff Kessler and Peter Cognetti 9-8(4) in a hard fought match at the No. 1 spot. Dan Sauter and Bjorn Merinder were also victorious in doubles play as they defeated Tommy Gates and Kristian Broaddus, 8-2 in the third spot. Dennis Zlobinsky and Mike Lessing were unable to hold off Alex Veronis and Dan Barrus in the No. 2 spot, falling in an 8-4 match.
 
In singles play, Zlobinsky and Erik Kremheller were the only Stags to win their individual matches. Michalisin, who got injured during his doubles match, was unable to participate in his singles match. At No. 2 singles, Zlobinsky prevailed in a three-set match over Jeff Kessler, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, while Kremheller soundly defeated Tommy Gates 6-2, 6-0 at third singles. At. No. 1 singles, Sauter fell to Alex Veronis 7-5, 6-0, and Lessing was topped by Peter Cognetti 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. The match was clinched at No. 5 singles as Dan Barrus defeated R.J. Mirabile 7-5, 6-4. Merinder also played his first set to 7-5, but was unable to hold off Kristian Broaddus, and fell 7-5, 6-1.
 
The loss brings the Stags to 5-5 overall. The Fairfield University men's tennis team returns to action when they play Villanova on March 26. The match was originally scheduled to be played at home, but will now take place indoors at Yale. Match time is set for 5:30 pm.
