Softball Sweeps On First Day Of Stony Brook Invita

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University softball team opened the Stony Brook Invitational with a sweep of the Collge of the Holy Cross and the host school on Saturday afternoon. The Stags posted an 11-2 decision over the Crusaders and followed up with a 2-1 victory against the Seawolves.

In the opener, Kristina Lingo provided a pair of hits and three RBI to anchor the Stags offense. Fairfield opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning as Kimi Kurata drove home the first run with a ground out and Kristen Filicia's double to center field.

The Stags doubled up their lead with another three runs in the fourth frame, as Lingo and Mikayla Shumate each added an RBI single. Macy Cutshaw made the score 7-0 with an RBI double in the fifth inning.

Holy Cross put its runs on the board during a fifth-inning rally, as a two-run double was the big hit against starter Rebecca Trott. The Stags put the game away with a four-run sixth inning with Lingo driving a two-run double and Rachel Beaudoin adding a run-scoring walk.

Trott earned the complete-game victory by scattering four hits and striking out a personal best 11 strikeouts.

In the second game, Fairfield rallied from a one-run deficit by plating two runs in the top of the seventh. The team loaded the bases when Flicia picked up an infield hit, took second on a walk by Shumate, and both advanced a base on an infield hit by Lingo. Alli Wigand stepped to the plate and tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Shumate scored the winning run on a passed ball.

Stony Brook scored its only run when Fairfield commited a pair of errors in the second inning. Starter Sarah Minice did not allow a hit in the inning. The senior ended up winning the game without allowing an earned run. She allowed just three hits and fanned five batters to earn the complete game victory.

Fairfield finishes up the two-day event by playing Stony Brook at 10:30 am and Holy Cross at 12:30 pm on Sunday.
