BALTIMORE, Md. – The Fairfield University baseball team pounded out 22 hits to upend the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) 20-9 this afternoon in the series finale between the two squads. Six Stags had multi-hit days, including senior
Tucker Nathans and junior
Mark Skrapits who each went 5-for-7.
Nathans, who also hit his second homer of the season, scored four times for the Stags (5-5) and drove in two runs. With his five hits, Nathans brought his career total to 220 and is now nine hits away from snapping Fairfield's hits record of 228 held by former Stag Ryan Bittner.
Skrapits drove in six runs and scored twice while sophomore
Anthony Hajjar drove in five runs on a homer and a double and crossed the plates twice. Junior
Larry Cornelia went 3-for-5 on the afternoon with a double and three runs scored. Senior
Carmine DeVito went 2-for-3 with a double, three walks, two RBI, and two runs scored.
UMBC (1-7) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but Skrapits tied it up in the top of the second with a single up the middle which plated two runs. The Retrievers regained their lead in the bottom of the inning, pushing two runs across the plate, and extended its advantage to 6-2 in the bottom of the third.
Fairfield answered in the top of the fourth with a four-run inning. With two on and one out, Skrapits doubled to right center to clear the bases. Nathans followed with a two-run homer to right center to tie the game. In the top of the fifth, the Stags took the lead on a single by Cornelia and proceeded to score three more runs for the 10-6 advantage.
The Retrievers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Stags notched four runs in the seventh and exploded for six runs in the top of the eighth to extend their lead to 20-8. UMBC scored the game's final run in the bottom of the eighth.
Sophomore
Kyle Capaldo picked up the win to improve to 1-1 on the season. Capaldo went 5.1 innings, scattering three runs on six hits while fanning six batters. Senior
Brian Comiskey tossed a scoreless inning of relief, striking two of the three batters he faced.
Fairfield returns to action on Tuesday, March 15 as the Stags host Big East foe St. John's University at 3pm on Alumni Diamond.
