Softball Picks Up Win Over Lehigh On Final Day Of

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The Fairfield University softball team posted an extra-inning victory against Lehigh University on the final day of the East Carolina Pirate Classic, edging the Hawks by a 12-11 margin in eight innings.

The Stags scored in the first three innings and eventualy built a 9-1 lead after four innings. Lehigh responded with a pair of runs in the fifth and six runs in the sixth to tie the game. In the extra inning, Fairfield sent home three base runners to take a 12-9 lead. Lehigh nearly tied the game but its rally fell short after scoring a pair of runs.

Kristina Lingo, Alli Wigand, Rae Ball, and Mikayla Shumate each recorded a pair of RBI in the game. Kristen Filicia added an RBI triple during the game. Ball picked up  her first collegiate win in relief of starter Sarah Minice and Emily Orr. Ball went the final two-plus innings to register the victory.

The Stags finished the Pirate Classic with a 2-3 record.

Fairfield does not return to the softball diamond until March 11 when it participates in the Wolfpack Challenge, hosted by North Carolina State University. The team will play Stony Brook, James Madison, Charleston Southern, Maine, and the host school.
