Box Score - Game 1
Box Score - Game 2

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. –
The Fairfield University baseball team split a doubleheader with the College of William & Mary this afternoon. The Tribe took the first game 14-2, but the Stags took the nightcap, 6-5, for their first victory of the season.

In that second game, Fairfield (1-2) erased a two-run deficit to come from behind and overtake William & Mary (2-6). Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth, junior Larry Cornelia got the Stags on the board by using his speed on the base paths. After leading off with a single, Cornelia stole second then, stole third and scored after the ball got by the third baseman on the attempt.

In the top of the fifth, after Fairfield loaded the bases, Cornelia was hit by a pitch to force in Carmine DeVito and tie the game 2-2. Nathans then cleared the bases with a shot to left field that was misplayed to give the Stags a 5-2 lead. Fairfield added another run late in the inning as Mark Skrapits beat out grounder back to the pitcher allowing Nathans to score. William & Mary got two of the runs back on a double by Chris Forsten in the bottom half of the inning and pulled within 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth. But sophomore Kyle Capaldo came on in relief and shut down the Tribe the rest of the way to earn his first collegiate save. Junior Scott Warwick picked up his first collegiate victory, scattering five runs over 5.2 innings.

In the first game, the Tribe pulled out to a 3-0 lead after the third inning. The Stags got on the board in the top of the fourth as Cornelia scored on a groundout by Skrapits. William & Mary broke it open in the sixth inning, putting four runs on the board. The Tribe then put the game out of reach with a seven-run eighth inning. The Stags scored a run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Nick Piccirillo who was 2-for-2 off the bench. William & Mary's Logan Billbrough (1-0) tossed a gem, allowing just one unearned run and four hits with seven strikeouts in eight innings of work. Graduate student Scott Gussaroff took the loss, allowing six runs on four hits and five walks in 5.1 innings.

Fairfield finishes the series with William & Mary tomorrow, February 27, at 1pm. LiveStats will be available by visiting www.TribeAthletics.com.
