GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Tifffany Lawson recorded four hits while
Kristina Lingo added four RBI as the Fairfield University softball team split a pair of games on opening day. The Stags opened with a 2-1 win over Campbell in the opener, but dropped an 11-10 decision to Towson in the nightcap. The two games were part of the East Carolina Pirate Classic which continues through the weekend.
Kristen Filicia drove the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The run completed a two-inning rally that started with a single run in the bottom of the sixth. Lingo drove home that first Fairfield run with a hit that sent home Lawson. Campbell grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, scoring a run against starter
Sarah Minice. The senior did not allow any runs after the first frame, scattering four hits and fanning six batters in seven innings.
In the second game, Fairfield secured a 2-0 lead with a run in both the first and second innings before Towson broke open the game with seven runs in the bottom of the second. The Tigers tacked on another run in the third inning to take an 8-1 lead. Fairfield rallied for three runs in the fifth and five more runs in the sixth to take its first lead of the game at 10-8. Towson tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs before posting the game-winner in the last half of the seventh.
Lingo brought home three runs in the game, which included a sacrifice fly in two different innings.
Rae Ball drove home her first three runs as a Stag and hit her first career homer in the game. The freshman also tossed four innings and fanned three hitters.
