Stags Conclude Action At MAAC Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y. –
Fairfield University junior Michelle Yoshida made it a three-peat in the women's 100-yard freestyle while setting her sixth program record in three days as the Stags wrapped up competition at the 2011 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Swimming & Diving Championships at the Burt Flickinger Center.
 
Yoshida won her third-straight MAAC crown in the 100 free with a time of 51.06 seconds, breaking her own school record by .17 in the process. The victory capped off another outstanding MAAC Championship for Yoshida, who won the 100y backstroke on Friday night by blazing a MAAC and a program record time of 55.62 seconds.Yoshida was also the runner-up in the 50y freestyle, missing out on her third-straight title in that event by .01 seconds. Yoshida was also a member of four program-record setting relays during the three-day competition.
 
Sophomore Cacky Keating placed fourth in the women's 200y butterfly and broke her own school record for the second time on the day by stopping the clock in 2:08.17. In the prelims, she posted a time of 2:08.62, breaking her own school record of 2:10.63 which was set two weeks ago. In the B final of the event, freshman Brianna Riley placed 14th with a time of 2:14.35.
 
In the 200y butterfly, junior Stefan Toi set a program record by finishing in a time of 1:58.24 to place 13th overall and qualify for ECACs. Toi broke the previous standard of 1:58.70 set in 2009 by current senior Jonathan O'Connor.
 
Freshman Suzy Lawlor won the B final the women's 200y breaststroke and placed ninth overall with a time 2:27.66, good for a personal best. Junior Brian Friedlander placed tenth in the men's 200y breaststroke with an ECAC 'A' qualifying time of 2:09.03.
 
In the men's 100y freestyle, sophomore Paul Bimmler placed tenth overall with a personal best of 47.40 seconds while junior Greg Bellizzi placed 13th with a time of 47.94 seconds. Both times met the ECAC 'A' standard, while Bimmler was .06 seconds off the program record.
 
In the men's 1-meter diving event, freshman Brien Bates placed 12th overall with a score of 160.50. In his final competition as a Stag, senior Brett Carisio registered a score of 152.70 to finish in 13th place. Sophomore Ryan Krebs took 16th with a score of 146.90.
 
In the women's 1650y freestyle, freshman Moe Osmulski finished sixth overall with a time of 17:48.42, good for ECAC qualification. Senior Allison Russoniello placed 17th overall with a personal best of 18:19.78. Freshman Megan Kuzniewski had a personal best of 18:45.03 while sophomore Brigitte Germain finished in 19:15.28. Senior Wanda Szarek clocked a personal best of 19:56.95 while classmate Colleen Wilson posted a time of 20:03.89.
 
The women's 400y freestyle relay of freshman Emily Pedrick, Osmulski, Keating, and Yoshida set a program record with a time of 3:35.12, eclipsing the previous best by more than a second.
 
In the men's 1650y freestyle, freshman Kevin Greener placed 17th overall with a personal best of 16:54.11 while O'Connor placed 19th with a time of 16:55.05; both times met the ECAC 'B' standard. Matt Palmer had a personal best in the event with a time of 19:48.93.
 
The men's 400y freestyle relay of juniors Brendan Sarpu, Andrew Robinson, Toi, and Bellizzi finished with a time of 3:13.45.
 
The Fairfield women's team placed sixth overall with 321 points while the men finished eighth with 193.5 points. Marist College was the women's champion with 843 points while Loyola University Maryland was the men's champion with 796 points.
 
 
Saturday's Prelims
In the women's 200y backstroke, three Stags posted personal bests. Emily Kelly finished in 2:14.78, an ECAC 'B' qualifying time, and was followed by Bridget McGowan in 2:16.38 and Annie O'Halloran in 2:26.14.
 
In the women's 100y freestyle, Pedrick just missed the cut after posting a time of 54.79 seconds, a personal best and an ECAC 'B' time. Sophomore Caitlin Moran clocked a time of 56.45 seconds while seniors Samantha Ceglia had a time of 58.28 seconds and junior Alyssa Conroy finished in 1:00.76.
 
In the women's 200y breaststroke, Liz Garvey recorded a personal best of 2:36.31. In the women's 200y butterfly, Samantha Distler posted a time of 2:21.75 while senior Sasha Campbell finished with a time of 2:25.62.
 
In the men's 200y backstroke, junior Kenny Muti had a personal best of 2:20.47 while freshman Kyle Rozanitis had a time of 2:09.61. In the men's 100y freestyle, Sarpu had a personal best of 48.56 seconds while Tom Freda finished in 54.62 seconds.
 
In the men's 200y breaststroke, senior Charlie Helm posted an ECAC 'B' time of 2:15.50 while freshman Rich Straub finished in 2:17.68 and sophomore Tim McCann in 2:21.25.
 
In the men's 200y butterfly, Robinson was the first alternate after recording a time of 2:01.30, good for the ECAC 'B' cut. Freshman Cody Parker had a personal best of 2:02.83 in the even while junior Anthony Caserta also recorded a personal best of 2:07.18.
