Fairfield comes off a 55-44 decision over Arizona State University on Thanksgiving night behind a 21-point effort from
Rakim Sanders. The senior scored the game's first seven points and the Stags never trailed in the game.
Ryan Olander was the only other Fairfield player in double figures with 11 points. The Stags forced 22 turnovers in the game, the second time an opponent has registered more than 20 miscues in game.
The Stags held Arizona State to just 19 points in the first half, the fifth time this season that the opponent has failed to reach 30 points in the opening 20 minutes. Now, the team turns it focus to the University of Dayton, which brings a 3-1 record into tonight's game. The Stags and the Flyers have met two previous times with Dayton winning both games. The teams met for the first time in 1967-68, which resulted in a 95-70 win, and crossed paths in the 1978 National Invitation Tournament which ended with a 108-93 win for the Flyers.
Dayton defeated Wake Forest in its first game of the Old Spice Tournament, coming from behind in the second half to post an 80-76 decision. Paul Williams represents the team's top scorer with a 14.5. scoring average, one of four Dayton student-athletes in double figures. Kevin Dillard is next in line with a 12.3 scoring average, while Chris Johnson (11.4 ppg) and Josh Benson (10.5 ppg) also tally more than 10 points per game.
The Flyers are an excellent three-point shooting team, netting nine long-range jumpers per game (36 of 98). Williams is responsible for most of those shots from behind the arc, hitting 13 of 23 tries this year (57 percent). Johnson is also enjoying his time behind the line, making nine of 23 (39 percent) this season.
