FAIRFIELD, Conn. – In an overtime battle, Fairfield University field hockey beat the Lock Haven Lady Eagles by a 2-1 margin.
The first half was a long back and forth battle as neither team scored but each had a number of shots. In the last five minutes of the half, Lock Haven's senior standout Leslie Ahern was able to get one past Fairfield goalkeeper
Maddy Sposito to take the lead 1-0. The Stags fought back but couldn't get one into the net.
Entering the second period, Lock Haven had the lead 1-0. The score held for much of the second half but Fairfield kept the pressure on, never giving up. At the 58:08 mark,
Leah Furey passed the ball over to
Marit Westenberg who shot it past Lock Haven goalkeeper Kelsey Moll to tie the game at one a piece. The score held for the remainder of regulation time, sending the Stags and Lady Eagles into overtime.
Entering overtime, both teams showed a lot of intensity. Each team had three shots in overtime play, but it was
Felicitas Heinen for the Stags who scored the game winning goal, providing Stags with the 2-1 victory in overtime. After a penalty cornerwas taken by
Nikki McLucas, the ball made its way to
Shealyn Testa who set up Heinen for her second game winner of the season.
Fairfield, now 8-3, outshot Lock Haven 14-8 on the day. The Stags did not allow one shot on goal the entire second half, thanks to their pressuring offense and impressive defense. Sposito added two more saves to her season total of 23.
Fairfield field hockey will return to play on Friday, October 8 as they travel to Albany, N.Y. to take on America East opponent and nationally ranked Albany at 4 p.m. The following day they will return to Alumni Field to play a nonconference matchup against Brown at 2 p.m.
