Field Hockey Starts Season With 2-0 Win Over Saint

Field Hockey is on the Road at Vermont This Weeken

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Fairfield travels to Burlington, Vt. for their only game of the weekend at 12 p.m. on Saturday, October 22 against America East opponent Vermont.

Both teams are 0-3 in conference play and are going in fighting for their first conference wins.  Vermont is 6-9 overall most recently dropping to #16 Albany, 0-3 and #5 Syracuse, 0-12.  The Catamounts have earned 25 goals on the season in comparison to their opponents' 42.  Vermont goalkeepers have tallied for 153 saves on the season, sophomore Stephanie Zygmunt accounts for 151 of those saves.  The goalkeeper has clocked almost all the time at the net with a 2.70 goals against average and a .786 save percentage.  Senior forward/midfielder Emily Bastiaanse and sophomore forward Colleen Slaughter are the team's point leaders both with 14.  Bastiaanse has tallied six goals and two assists while Slaughter has registered seven goals on the season.

Fairfield (8-7) most recently dropped two games last weekend to #14 Maine and in-state rival Yale.  The Stags have been outscored 20-31 on the season, scoring more than half of their goals in the second period.  Captain, Marit Westenberg (The Hague, Netherlands) continues to lead the team with 15 points, breaking down to six goals and three assists.  After sitting out for the beginning of the season and considered the team's 'secret weapon' by Coach Jackie Kane, freshman Lindsey Hatch (Sewell, N.J.) has earned two goals in her last three appearances.

The following weekend, the Stags will close out their season with back to back home game days.  Fairfield will first face Boston University on Saturday, October 29 at 2 p.m., followed by Liberty on Sunday at 11 a.m.
