FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team (1-1-1) will play its fourth straight home game on Saturday, September 11 when it hosts the University of Massachusetts (0-1-1) . Game time is slated for 2 pm at Lessing Field.
The Stags are coming off a dramatic, come-from-behind win in their last outing, edging Yale University by a 2-1 count in double overtime. Fairfield fell behind 1-0 in the first half before
Erik Ilisije tied the game in the second half. He finished the game less than two minutes into the second overtime when he finished a play started by
Nuno Rodrigues.
Fairfield, which is in the midst of a seven-game home stand to start the season, has tallied four goals in its last two games which included a 2-2 draw with Bradley University. Ilisije leads the team in scoring with four points, all coming off the two goals against Yale.
David Piedrahita and
Adam Cowen also have a goal to their credit this season, both scoring in the Bradley game.
Goalkeeper Michael O'Keeffe has played every minute to date, posting 10 saves in three games with a 1.49 goals against average.
UMass has played two games so far, and Bryant Craft has tallied a goal in each of those outings. Craft netted the team's lone goal in a 1-1 tie against Boston University in the season opener. He finished a penalty kick in the second half for the team's first goal of the season. He followed with a the team's first goal in a 3-2 loss to 10th-ranked Harvard University on the road. Stuart Amick is the team's other goal scorer in 2010, cutting the Crimson's lead to 3-2 with his score in the 84th minute.
The Minuteman will leave the state of Massachusetts for the first time, having opened in Boston and playing at home in their last outing. After Saturday's game, UMass will play eight straight home games, not returning to the road until October 16 at the University of Rhode Island.
The Stags, under Head Coach
Carl Rees, will continue their home stand after Saturday's game by hosting Boston College on September 14, Northeastern on September 17, and Saint Francis (N.Y.) on September 22. All three of those games will take place at Lessing Field beginning at 7 pm.
