Women's Tennis Falls to #8 Stanford in NCAA Tourna

STANFORD, Calif. – The Fairfield University women's tennis team had their 2010 season come to a close on Friday afternoon as the Stags fell to eighth-seeded Stanford University, 4-0, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

Fairfield, making their second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, finishes the season at 19-6, tying the program record for wins in a season. In addition in 2010, the Stags captured their second-straight MAAC Championship crown and picked up a MAAC Regular Season Championship title after going undefeated in league play.

At first singles, senior Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y.) fell to No. 4 Hilary Barte, 6-0, 6-0. Postupack, the 2010 MAAC Championship Most Outstanding Performer, finishes her career with a 64-55 singles record and a 75-37 doubles record. Her combined 139 victories are the second-most in program history.

At second singles, senior Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.) was battling it out with No. 83 Lindsay Burdette but the match was suspended with Burdette leading 6-1, 2-1. Rys finishes her career with a 77-47 singles record and a 72-52 doubles record. Her 149 combined victories are the most by any Stag, male or female, in program history.

At third singles, junior Kristen Liu (Closter, N.J.) was trailing No. 33 Mallory Burdette, the Pac-10 Rookie of the Year, 6-1, 5-0, when the match was suspended. Liu finishes the season a 15-10 singles record and a 13-16 doubles record.

At fourth singles, freshman Meghan Sullivan (Tampa, Fla.) gave No. 68 Stacey Tan all she could handle. Sullivan led in the first set 2-1 when Tan came back from the 6-2 win. Tan held a slight 2-1 advantage in the second set when play was suspended. Sullivan, Fairfield's Female Freshman of the Year, finishes her stellar campaign with her eight-match win streak intact and a 20-7 singles record and a 17-7 doubles record.

At fifth singles, junior Alyssa Ruiz (Glen Head, N.Y.) fell to Carolyn McVeigh, 6-0, 6-0, snapping her eight-match winning streak. Ruiz, a First Team All-MAAC selection, finishes the season with a 24-7 singles record and a 9-4 mark in doubles.

At sixth singles, senior Gretchen Amberg (Manasquan, N.J.) fell to Veronica Li, 6-0, 6-0. Amberg finishes her career with a 32-25 singles record and a 52-38 doubles record.

In doubles, the tandem of Sullivan and senior Michaela Cerrone (N. Scituate, R.I.) fell to Li and McVeigh, 8-2, at the third spot. Cerrone finishes her career with a 36-36 singles record and a 65-48 doubles record.

At first doubles, Liu and Rys fell to second-ranked Barte and Lindsay Burdette, 8-0. At second doubles, Postupack and Amberg were trailing 56th-ranked Mallory Burdette and Tan, 7-1, when play was suspended. Postupack and Amberg finish the season with a perfect 10-0 doubles record.
