KINGSTON, R.I. – The Fairfield University men's swim team was third at the 15th Annual Harold Anderson Invitational while the women's team placed fifth during the two-day competition at the University of Rhode Island.
Junior
Brian Friedlander (River Edge, N.J.) picked up three individual victories for the Stags. He moved to 7-0 in the 100-yard breaststroke by clocking a time of 59.66 seconds. He posted a victory in the 200y breaststroke with a time of 2:08.67, marking his sixth victory in the event in eight meets this season. Friedlander also won the 200y IM with a time of 1:57.71.
Junior Michelle Yoshida (Kaneohe, Hawaii) won two individual events and was the runner-up in a third. She won the 100y freestyle with a time of 52.85 seconds and notched a victory in the 50y freestyle with a time of 24.20 seconds. Yoshida was the runner-up in the 100 back finishing in a time of 58.47 seconds.
On the women's side, freshman Moe Osmulski (Rumson, N.J.) set a program record in the 200y IM, finishing a time of 2:12.93 to place third overall. She broke the previous standard of 2:13.21 set by Lauren Kennedy in 2009. Osmulski also recorded a personal best in the 400y IM with a time of 4:42.37.
Sophomore Cacky Keating (Chatham, N.J.) was the runner-up in the 100y butterfly with a time of 1:00.07. She also took fifth in both the 200y fly (2:13.24) and the 200y IM (2:15.84). Freshman Suzy Lawlor (North Wales, Pa.) was the runner-up in the 100y breaststroke with a time of 1:08.41 and sixth in the 200y breaststroke with a time of 2:30.16. Senior Katie Merz (Absecon, N.J.) was fifth in the 500y freestyle with a time of 5:14.84 while freshman Emily Pedrick (New Milford, N.J.) was fifth in the 200y freestyle with a personal best of 1:59.12.
The women's 400y medley relay of Yoshida, Lawlor, Keating, and Osmulski placed second with a time of 4:00.36. The quartet also comprised the 200y medley relay and finished third with a time of 1:51.25.
For the men's team, senior
Jonathan O'Connor (Norwalk, Conn.) was the runner-up in the 500y freestyle with a personal best of 4:53.99 and placed third in both the 1000y freestyle (10:15.26) and the 400IM (4:20.21).
Sophomore
Paul Bimmler (Reading, Mass.) was the runner-up in two events, placing second in the 50y freestyle (22.14) and the 100y free (48.98). Bimmler was also fifth in the 100y backstroke with a personal best of 55.73 seconds. Junior
Greg Bellizzi (Edison, N.J.) was third in the 100y free with a time of 49.11 seconds while junior
Stefan Toi (Newtown, Conn.) set a personal best in the 400y IM with a time of 4:24.39 en route to fourth-place points.
The men's relays had solid effort as well. The 200y medley relay of Bimmler, Friedlander,
Andrew Robinson (Manalapan, N.J.), and Bellizzi placed second in a time of 1:39.15. The 200y freestyle relay of Robinson,
Brendan Sarpu (South Windsor, Conn.), Bellizzi, and
Tim McCann (Hackettstown, N.J.) took third in 1:30.06. The 400y medley relay of
Andrew Hiss (Freehold, N.J.), Friedlander, Robinson, and Bimmler was third also, finishing in a time of 3:37.96.
Fairfield has concluded the first half of its season. The Stags return to action in January when they face Colorado College during their winter training trip in Hawaii.
