POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. –
The Fairfield University men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened league competition with a pair of tough losses at Marist College this afternoon. The men's team was edged 161-125 while the women's team fell 180-111.
 
Junior Michelle Yoshida (Kaneohe, Hawaii) won two individual events and was on a record-setting relay for the women's team while junior Brian Friedlander (River Edge, N.J.) picked up a pair of individual wins and a relay victory on the men's side.
 
Yoshida won the 50 free for the fourth time this season by clocking a time of 25.11 seconds to beat out Marist's Bonnie Orr (26.30). Yoshida then won the 100 free for the third time this season with a time of 54.08 seconds to touch-out Marist's Madeline Arciello.
 
Yoshida anchored the 200y freestyle relay team that shattered the program record by nearly eight seconds. Sophomore Caitlin Moran (West Henrietta, N.Y.), sophomore Cacky Keating (Chatham, N.J.), freshman Moe Osmulski (Rumson, N.J.), and Yoshida posted a winning time of 1:30.91 breaking the previous mark of 138.43 set at MAACs last season. The women's 200y medley relay of Yoshida, freshman Suzy Lawlor (North Wales, Pa.), Keating, and Moran registered a time of 1:54.24 to place second.
 
Lawlor captured the 100y breaststroke for the third time this season with a time of 1:11.19 while Liz Garvey (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) was the runner-up in 1:15.90. Lawlor was also the runner-up in the 200y breaststroke with a time of 2:34.44.
 
Friedlander, meanwhile, remained undefeated in the 100 breaststroke this season by posting a winning time of 1:03.10. He also captured the 200y breaststroke with a time of 2:17.12.
 
Fairfield won both men's relay events, starting the meet with a victory in the 200y medley. Sophomore Paul Bimmler (Reading, Mass.), Friedlander, junior Andrew Robinson (Manalapan, N.J.), and junior Greg Bellizzi (Edison, N.J.) clocked a winning time of 1:42.67. The 200y freestyle relay of Robinson, freshman Cody Parker (Ocean Twp., N.J.), Bellizzi, and Bimmler notched a winning time of 1:31.01.
 
Bellizzi captured the men's 50y freestyle with a time of 22.63 seconds to touch-out Marist's Josh Sklana. Bimmler was the runner-up in two events, finishing second in the 100y free with a time of 49.41 seconds and in the 200y free with a time of 1:49.73, just off the pace of the Red Foxes' Steven Vendetta (1:49.46).
 
Parker finished second in the 500y free with a time of 4:59.19 and third in the 1000y free with a time of 10:18.98. Robinson was the runner-up in the 200y fly with a time of 56.17 seconds and took third in the 200y fly with a time of 2:06.24. Sophomore Andrew Hiss (Freehold, N.J.) was third in both the 100y back (58.51) and the 200y back (2:11.93) while picking up first place points in the 200y IM with a time of 2:06.50.
 
Keating was the runner-up in the women's 100y fly with a time of 1:00.63 and took third in the 200fly with a time of 2:14.59. Moran was third in the 200y free with a time of 2:05.12 while Osmulski was third in the 500y free with a time of 5:19.37.
 
Sophomore Ryan Krebs (East Williston, N.Y.) finished third in both diving events. On the 1-meter, he posted a score of 158.25. On the 3-meter, he had a score of 137.25. For the women, Abigail Sanders (Falls Church, Va.) placed fourth in both events, finishing with a mark of 145.87 on the 1-meter and a mark of 161.40 on the 3-meter. Sophomore Kim Pettit (Westwood, Mass.) turned in a personal best of 130.57 on the 3-meter while posting a score of 108.22 on the 1-meter.
 
Fairfield (2-2) returns to action on November 13 as at the Stags host Manhattan College at 2pm in the RecPlex pool.
