Field Hockey Adds Six Newcomers For 2011 Season

Field Hockey Hosts Pair Of Games This Weekend

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team hosts a pair of games over the weekend, beginning with America East opponent University of New Hampshire on Friday afternoon. The New Hampshire game time has been changed to 3 pm. On Sunday, the Stags welcome Yale University for a 1 pm match up. Both games will be played at University Field.

Fairfield brings an 8-8 overall record into the weekend which includes an 0-3 mark in America East play. The Stags will try to recover from a pair of sebacks last week, which included a shootout loss to the University of California. The team could reach double-digits in the win column should it win two of its final three games, which would be the most wins for the program since posting 11 during the 2001 season.

Marit Westenberg remains the team's top scorer with 26 points, tallying 10 goals and six assists in 16 games. Amanda Sullivan runs second among her teammates with 15 points off six goals and three assists. Goalkeeper Maddy Sposito owns a 3.06 goals against average with a .748 save percentage.

Friday's game is critical for the Stags as a win over New Hampshire would keep the team in the running for one of the four America East tournament berths. The Wildcats bring an 11-5 overall record and a 3-0 conference mark into the Friday's contest. Two Wildcat student-athletes earned weekly honors from America East after helping their team post a win over nationally-ranked Boston University. Hayley Rausch scored two goals and added an assist in a 3-2 win over the 14th-ranked Terriers. Megan Bozek won the rookie of the week after helping the Wildcat defense shutdown Boston University and Boston College last week.

Whitney Frates leads the team in scoring with 10 goals and six assists for 26 points in 16 games. Rausch places second with 22 points, netting seven goals and assisting on eight scores. Kara Connolly (19 points) and Kyle Lyons (15 points) have also reached double figures for scoring. Katherine Nagengast has played nearly every minute in goal this season, posting a 1.96 goals against average with a .713 save percentage (77 saves).

Yale owns an 8-5 overall record ana 3-1 Ivy League mark into the weekend, also playing Penn on Saturday afternoon at home. The Bulldogs posted a pair of wins last week, defeating Dartmouth by a 3-1 count and Holy Cross by a 2-0 margin. 

Two Yale student-athletes received Ivy League weekly accolades for their roles in the two wins, namely Erin Carter and Georgia Holland. Carter, a defender, posted three goals in the two wins, including a pair of goals in the Dartmouth victory. Holland, who usually plays midfield, was moved to the back last week and responded with two strong performances. She helped the Yale defense limit Dartmouth and Holy Cross to just six shots on goal combined.

Erica Borgo leads the team in scoring with 15 points, registering five goals and five assists in 13 starts. Carter and Holland are next in line with 14 and 13 points, respectively. All of Carter's points have come via seven goals, while Holland reached her total with four goals and five assists. Diana Landshut leads the team with 12 assists, accounting for her 12 total points.

Katie Bolling has spent a majority of the time in Yale's goal, recording a 2.31 goals against average and a .694 save percentage in 666 minutes. Emily Cain has played more than 200 minutes this year, sporting a 2.57 goals against average with a .775 save percetnage.
