FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's and women's swimming and diving teams posted their first victories of the season by defeating Holy Cross on Friday night. The men's team (1-1) won 191-102 while the women's team (1-1) won 154-143 with numerous Stags winning multiple events.
Junior Michelle Yoshida (Kaneohe, Hawaii) won three individual events and was on a winning relay team. Yoshida won the 100y backstroke in a time of 59.79 seconds. She then captured the 50y freestyle with a time of 24.84 seconds. After the diving break, Yoshida won the 200y backstroke with a time of 2:13.52.
Sophomore Cacky Keating (Chatham, N.J.) also won three individual events and one relay event for the Stags. Keating won the 100y free in a time of 56.03 seconds. She had another solid effort in the 200y fly winning the event in 2:13.88 and captured the 100y fly with a time of 1:00.31.
Senior Katie Merz (Absecon, N.J.) captured a pair of distance events. She won the 1000y freestyle with a time of 11:11.39 and the 500y freestyle with a time of 5:28.50.
Rookie Suzy Lawlor (North Wales, Pa.) swept the women's breaststroke events. She had a solid performance in the 100y breaststroke, notching a winning time of 1:11.52. She also posted the victory in the 200y breaststroke with a time of 2:33.01.
Freshman Moe Osmulski (Rumson, N.J.) placed second in the 200y freestyle with a time of 2:01.36 and in the 200y breaststroke with a time of 2:33.02. She also swam a time of 2:14.67 in the 200y IM. Junior Caroline Menapace (Ambler, Pa.) was second in the 200y back with a time of 2:19.16.
The women's 400y medley relay of Yoshida, Osmulski, Keating, and Caitlin Moran (West Henrietta, N.Y.) had a good outing, capturing the event in a time of 4:06.20.
In the women's 1-meter diving event, freshman Abigail Sanders (Falls Church, Va.) placed second with a score of 180.15. Kim Pettit (Westwood, Mass.) had a mark of 107.78. On the 3-meter, Sanders finished third with a personal best of 161.55. Pettit finished with a score of 122.33.
The men's team had numerous double-winners and top finishes on the evening. Junior
Brian Friedlander (River Edge, N.J.) won the 100y breaststroke by more than two seconds with a time of 1:01.34. He then won by more than five seconds in the 200y breaststroke, clocking a time of 2:14.42. He was also on the winning 400y medley relay.
In the 200y freestyle, Fairfield took the top three spots; freshman
Cody Parker (Ocean Twp., N.J.) won the event in 1:52.80 and was followed by
Andrew Robinson (Manalapan, N.J.) in1:54.49 and junior
Tommy Peters (Basking Ridge, N.J.) in1:55.49. Parker also won the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:07.70 and was the runner-up in the 100y freestyle with a time of 51.56.
Fairfield also took the top three spots in the 200y fly. Robinson won the event with a time of 2:06.25 and was followed by
Jonathan O'Connor (Norwalk, Conn.) in 2:10.51 and
Anthony Caserta (Youngstown, N.Y.) in 2:11.35. Robinson also was victorious in the 100y fly with a time of 55.51 seconds.
In the 50y freestyle, the Stags finished first through third, with sophomore
Paul Bimmler (Reading, Mass.) winning the event in 22.12 seconds,
Tim McCann (Hackettstown, N.J.) taking second in 23.32 seconds, and
Brendan Sarpu (South Windsor, Conn.) placing third in 23.38 seconds. Bimmler also won the 100y freestyle with a time of 49.61 seconds and was the runner-up in the 100y fly with a time of 56.02 seconds.
Freshman
Kevin Greener (Chatham, N.J.) had a good swim in the 1000y freestyle registering a winning time of 10:41.80. He was also the runner-up in the 500y freestyle with a time of 5:10.35.
The men's 400y medley relay of
Andrew Hiss (Freehold, N.J.), Friedlander, Robinson, and Bimmler posted a winning time of 3:41.39.
In the men's 3-meter diving event, senior
Brett Carisio (Cheshire, Conn.) won with a score of 187.72. Sophomore
Ryan Krebs (East Williston, N.Y.) was second with 153.74 points while freshman
Brien Bates (Wellesley, Mass.) took third with a score of 138.74 in his first collegiate event. Krebs posted the winning mark on the 1-meter, notching a personal best of 189.30. Carisio was second with 188.10 points while Bates was third with a 173.76.
Fairfield returns to action on October 23 when the swimming team travels to the UConn Husky Invitational while the diving team heads to the Central Connecticut State Diving Invitational.
