FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's tennis team punched their ticket to the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships with a 7-0 win over Siena on Saturday afternoon. The Stags recorded their fourth league win of the season and clinched a tournament spot for the second consecutive season.
The Stags swept doubles action and held a 1-0 lead heading into singles. Brad Orban / Anthony Caputo earned a 6-3 win at No. 1, Ethan Ammon / Jeffrey Rodgers grabbed a 6-2 win at No. 2, and Dylan Appel / Tyler Shibles won 6-1 at No. 3.
In singles competition, Fairfield was able to win five of the six matches in straight-set fashion. Orban earned a 6-1, 6-3 win in the top spot, Caputo grabbed a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2, and Rodgers won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3. Ammon battled for three sets at No. 4 and came out on top 6-7, 6-1, 10-6. Appel fought hard for a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 5 and Shibles cruised for a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Fairfield opens up with semifinal action at the MAAC Championships on Saturday, April 29 in West Windsor, N.J.
