FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women’s tennis team and Head Coach Jeff Bricker add four student-athletes to the Class of 2020.
"We have a great freshmen class this year. All four freshmen have a lot of tournament and match experience at the junior level and I expect them to be immediate contributors both in singles and doubles. The added depth will be crucial to our success throughout the year," said the Head Coach.
A standout from Glen Carbon, Illinois, Emily Lombardi captained the Edwardsville Senior High School tennis team. Lombardi played No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles for the squad while also earning the 100% Award and the Most Improved Award.
A No. 1 singles player all four years at Rutgers Prep, Jessica Pil also earned the Most Valuable Player Award each season. In both 2014 and 2015 Pil was a finalist of the Somerset County Tournament and was a finalist in the Prep State B Tournament in 2014 before winning the tournament in 2015.
Diana Prinos heralds from Foxborough High School in Massachusetts. Playing at No. 1 singles, she was the MIAA Individual South Section finalist and named the league MVP. Her team won the MIAA Division 2 State Championship in 2016, while individually she earned league all-star nods four years in a row.
Shelby Vertula was a two-time All-State First Team selection, a two-time Southern Connecticut Conference First Team Selection, and a two-time SWC Conference First Teamer while at Lauralton Hall in Connecticut. As the senior captain, she guided the team to their second consecutive state championship in 2016.
The Stags open their fall slate at the Sacred Heart Doubles Tournament on September 11th.
