FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University swimming and diving teams will compete in two tri-meets this weekend. On Friday, the teams will compete against Fordham and Monmouth at 5:00 p.m. Then on Saturday, they will take on the University of Bridgeport and Mount Saint Mary at 1:30 p.m. The diving team will also host Bryant University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the RecPlex Pool.
Last time in the pool, both teams fell to Holy Cross. Jameson Duncan and Jordan Rahurahu both earned two top place finishes. Duncan grabbed the top spot in both the 800m freestyle (9:06.70) and 400m freestyle (4:24.16). Rahurahu earned first place finishes in the 200m butterfly (2:19.36) and in the 200m IM (2:14.75).
Colleen Young continued to dominate her events by winning the 200m breaststroke (2:47.67) and the 200m IM (2:32.39). The freshman also teamed with Kelly Cordes, Meghan Guinee, and Oreoluwa Cherebin in the 200m medley relay to take home the top spot.
Fordham heads into the weekend after sweeping Marist in their season opener. Freshman Chloe Mitchell was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week after winning the 1000y freestyle and grabbing a third place finish in the 500y freestyle in her first collegiate meet.
Monmouth is coming off a loss to Seton Hall on Tuesday night. The Hawks have a young squad returning just 12 total swimmers from last season where at the 2015 MAAC Championships, both teams finished ninth.
Bridgeport has already faced UConn, Keene State, and Rowan this season. Both teams will compete against the College of St. Rose on Friday before hosting the Stags on Saturday. Last season, the Purple Knights men’s team finished fourth at the Metro Conference Swimming Championships while the women’s team earned a third place finish.
The Knights of Mount Saint Mary come into the weekend boasting a winning record as the women’s side is 2-1 and the men are 1-1. They opened the season with a win at the College at Old Westbury, then the women earned their second win against the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Last time out, both squads fell to Ramapo College on Saturday, October 22.
The final matchup of the weekend will be against the Bryant Bulldogs diving team on Saturday afternoon. The women’s team posts a formidable duo of sophomores in Kelci Abernethy and Carissa Stemen. Both have been awarded NEC Diver of the Week Honors this month while Abernethy is also the reigning NEC Diver of the Year.
After this busy weekend, the Stags will not compete again until the Terrier Invitational which begins November 18.
