Softball Stays Local For Midweek Homestand

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball will host a three-game home stand this week which includes match ups with a couple of local opponents. The Stags welcome Quinnipiac University for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 2 pm. On Wednesday, the team will complete a home-and-home series with Yale University, hosting the Bulldogs for one game with first pitch slated for 4 pm.

The softball team continues to build momentum as its moves into the second half of the 2026 season, winning its last four games overall and six of its last eight MAAC games. Most recently, the Stags swept the University of Maine in non-conference play last Friday after taking a six-inning win over the University of New Haven. Fairfield received offensive support from several student-athletes and garnered strong outings from the pitching staff over last week's three wins.

Martina Gutierrez served as the team's top run producer over the seven-day stretch, driving in five runs and scoring twice to represent a large portion of the team's 17 runs scored during the three dates. Six of Fairfield's starting lineup batted .333 or better last week with Sammie Dougherty leading the way, hitting at a .600 clip during her two appearances. Ava Armuth batted .500 last week along with five runs scored and an RBI while Anna Paravati owned a .400 batting average with a double, a triple, and two RBI.  The outfielders rounded out the six hitters over the .333 mark with SJ Mull and Lauren Osland each putting a .375 hitting percentage in addition to Quinn McGonigle's .333 batting average.

Alyssa Weinberg worked some magic in the pitching circle with two victories in as many appearances while striking out 25 hitters in 13 innings of work. She opened the week with an 11-strikeout performance in a 10-2 win over New Haven before engaging in a pitching duel against Maine. She picked up her eighth win of the season against the Black Bears by fanning a season-best 14 strikeouts in the 2-1 win.

Quinnipiac enters the week with a 17-11 overall record and an 11-4 mark in MAAC play. The Bobcats have split their last six conference games, dropping two of three against Rider University before rallying with a pair of wins in a three-game set with Manhattan University.

The team has three hitters with batting averages above .350, namely Sofia Vega (.429), Kennedy Demott (.359), and Mary Fogg (.356). Demott offers an offensive threat as illustrated by her team leading four home runs and 25 RBI. Aryn Bombery is next in line with two homers while she and Riley Potter are responsible for 18 RBI each. Shannon Kendall has handled the bulk of the innings inside the circle, winning 12 games over 105-plus innings of work.

Yale, who defeated the Stags by a 4-3 score in mid-March, owns a 10-23 overall record with a 3-9 mark in Ivy League play. Libby Peoples sits on top of the Yale statistics sheet with a .400 batting average and paces the team with 11 extra-base hits which includes five doubles and five triples. Ella Gandolfo is also in the offensive mix with a .287 hitting percentage along with a team-best 20 runs scored. Ellie Joseph and Emma Taylor both have recorded four wins in the circle with Taylor leading the team with 54 strikeouts.
