FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Seniors
Alyssa Weinberg and
Cara Kochakian combined to provide the Fairfield University softball team with a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart University on Sunday afternoon, completing a three-game sweep of the Pioneers.
Weinberg established season-best with 15 strikeouts, allowing one hit over her six innings of work, while Kochakian picked up the lone RBI of the afternoon with a two-out RBI double in the fifth to give the Stags its one-run victory. Both seniors performed admirably throughout the Sacred Heart series with Weinberg registering 28 strikeouts in her two wins and Kochakian batted .571 and recorded four RBI in the sweep.
This afternoon, Weinberg lost her no-hit bid in the sixth inning when Ella Stoops picked up a two-out single. The left hander struck out at least two hitters in each of the first six innings before retiring the side on strikes in the seventh frame.
But, today's game was decided in the fifth inning despite the first two Fairfield hitters being retired off a pair of groundouts.
Danica Silvestri was next in the batter's box and the outfielder delivered a base hit. She advanced to second base following a wild pitch which put her in scoring position. Kochakian delivered with a run-scoring double to give all the run support Weinberg would need for her 11
th win of the season.
Those two fifth-inning hits by the Stags were the team's only ones of the game. Fairfield had three other base runners which came on free passes.
Sarah Bielski opened the game by being hit by a pitch. Silvestri and
SJ Mull worked a walk in the third and sixth innings, respectively to account for the Stags' base runners.
The Fairfield University softball team plays its next five games at home beginning with a single non-conference game against Hofstra University on Tuesday afternoon and Central Connecticut State University on Wednesday afternoon. The home stand continues when the Stags welcome Siena University for a three-game series over the weekend, playing a doubleheader on Saturday, April 18 and a single game on Sunday, April 19.
