FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University softball team will begin a three-game series with Sacred Heart University this weekend, playing a doubleheader on Saturday followed by a single game on Sunday.
The Stags saw their six-game winning streak come to an end in their last outing, a 12-3 decision at the hands of Yale University. The Bulldogs took command of the game early by scoring six runs in their first at-bat and never relinquished the lead. Fairfield's six consecutive wins were evenly split between MAAC opponents (Canisius and a doubleheader sweep of Quinnipiac) and non-conference foes (doubleheader sweep of Maine and a single game win over New Haven).
The team received outstanding offensive support during its winning run with six starters batting over .350 during the wins. Sophomore
Ava Armuth paced the Fairfield offense with a .353 batting average, scoring nine runs and adding four RBI. Graduate student
SJ Mull also put up impressive numbers with a .500 hitting percentage in addition to tallying five runs.
Freshman
Sammie Dougherty enjoyed her best week since joining the Stags, registering a .462 batting average with a team-best eight RBI. Five of those eight RBI came with two outs in an inning, making her hits even more valuable to the media.
Senior
Alyssa Weinberg was in the pitching circle for four of the team's six wins, posting a 1.42 ERA with a save in addition to 28 strikeouts in 24-plus innings.
Peyton Shields accounted for the other two wins for the pitching staff with two complete games and six strikeouts in 12.1 innings of work.
Sacred Heart brings a 15-21 overall record and a 10-6 MAAC mark into the weekend which includes dropping a pair of games to MAAC front-runner Marist University earlier in the week.
The Pioneers are the benefactors of a remarkable season from Sam Kowalski, who stands as the Sacred Heart leader in both pitching and hitting categories. The senior ranks third nationally with 16 complete games and 19
th in the nation with her 130 strikeouts. In the batter's box, Kowalski also sits on top among the MAAC statistics leaders with eight home runs and a .693 slugging percentage.
Following the Sacred Heart series, the Stags will return home for five-game home stand that begins with a single game against Hofstra University on April 14 for a single game that begins at 3 pm. The Fairfield home stand continues with a single game against Central Connecticut State University on Wednesday before the team ends the week with three games against Siena University over the weekend.
