Softball Takes On Army In Midweek Matchup

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball team will play a single game on Wednesday afternoon at 3 pm against Army West Point, the first of four games on this week's docket. The Stags will also host a three-game series with Mount St. Mary's this weekend, playing a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. Fairfield is coming off a three-game sweep of Merrimack College last weekend which capped a 4-2 week for the softball squad. The team received several individual performances over the weekend that highlight the sweep, beginning with infielder Anna Paravati. The senior batted .450 over the six games played last week, recording nine hits in 20 at-bats including four multi-hit games. She paced the offense with 10 RBI which brought her season total up to 16 on the season which ranks in the top 10 among all MAAC softball student-athletes. Freshman Sammie Dougherty also turned in a solid week by batting .333 over the stretch, posting five hits in 15 at-bats along with six RBI. She garnered at least one RBI in four of the six games, bringing her into second among her teammates with 10 RBI.

Pitcher Alyssa Weinberg also comes off several strong performances last weekend, registering a 1.91 ERA over 18.1 innings over the seven-day period. She tallied 23 strikeouts in those innings, highlighted by fanning eight hitters in the six innings against Central Connecticut State University and another eight batters in seven innings at Merrimack. Weinberg also earned two relief appearances including four scoreless and hitless work against Yale.

Army West Point brings a 10-14 overall record into Wednesday's contest, splitting four games at a St. John's tournament last weekend. The team won a pair of games from Harvard University but came up short twice against the host school. This game is the first of three games against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) teams this week, also taking on Rider University in a doubleheader this weekend.

Ashton White paces the offense with her .329 batting average, stroking a team-best 25 hits and a team-leading 17 RBI through her 24 starts this season. She also represents the team's top power threat, stroking five home runs in addition to her three doubles and one triple. Breanna Coonfare and Taylor Brown round out the top three hitters on the team, sporting a .318 and a .308 batting average. Both student-athletes can create chaos on the base paths as well with Brown recording nine steals in 10 attempts while Coonfare tallying six stolen bases in seven tries. Breanna Izzo has posted five of the team's wins from the pitching circle, owning a 5-4 record with two shutouts along with 50 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched.
